The Iron Horse Cross-Country Relay

IHR_LogoA virtual relay spanning 4,044 miles over 81 days. Sign up for one of our 1,011, 4-mile relay legs and help us Leave ALS Better Than We Found It!

July 4, 2020 marks the 81st anniversary of Lou Gehrig's famous Luckiest Man speech when he announced his retirement from baseball due to the 100% fatal condition of ALS. Each year, this date reminds us that much work is still to be done to find a treatment or a cure for the disease that was eventually named for Lou Gehrig.

To honor Lou Gehrig and to continue the fight against ALS, Iron Phi is excited to introduce the Iron Horse Cross-Country Relay, a virtual relay from July 4 - September 22, 2020 (81 days). The 4,044-mile route passes many landmarks that are important to the life of Lou Gehrig, and participants have the opportunity to complete one or more 4-mile legs of the route during the relay. The legs can be completed by walking, running, biking, swimming or any other activity that you consider athletic.

NOTE: Participants can complete their leg(s) from anywhere in the world. The relay route is simply a virtual depiction of the cross-country journey.

There is no fee to participate, but we hope that you will consider contributing or fundraising for Iron Phi in conjunction with your mileage. Iron Phi is a program of the LiveLikeLou Foundation, a national non-profit organization devoted to the cause of Lou Gehrig's disease.

Join us as we complete the cross-country journey for a great cause!

The Route

The 4,044-mile route will begin on July 4, 2020 at Yankee Stadium in Bronx, New York and will head west until our collective mileage reaches the Iron Horse Statues in Vantage, Washington, on September 22, 2020. The route was developed to connect many landmarks important to the life of Lou Gehrig. Participants will complete their mileage on the specific day(s) they sign up for, from anywhere in the world.

Learn more at the bottom of this page about the 13 landmark on the route.
