Phi Delta Theta

Since the beginning of Phi Delta Theta’s partnership with The ALS Association, we’ve had to ask each other and ourselves one simple question - What are the goals of the partnership? For Phi Delta Theta, we continue to evolve in our strategies about how to best mobilize our membership base to help fight the awful disease that is Lou Gehrig’s disease (ALS). Specifically, within our undergraduate chapters, our three main objectives are to:

  1. Introduce ALS to our undergraduate members and educate them about the impact that is has on individuals, families, communities and the world.
  2. Facilitate a connection with the cause in hopes of creating a life-long desire to assist in the fight against ALS.
  3. Encourage activities in local communities and participation in larger initiatives that raise funds and awareness for ALS.

We’re introducing the Iron Phi Province structure to strengthen our partnership with The ALS Association and to help Phi Delta Theta reach the three objectives stated above.

To become an Iron Phi Province, all chapters in the province must complete the three requirements below within the timeframe of July 1 – June 30 of any given academic-year.

Requirement #1  - Accomplish one of the two options below

  • Participate in or volunteer at a local Walk to Defeat ALS or a different event sponsored by The ALS Association.
  • Host a philanthropy event to benefit a local chapter of The ALS Association or the national offices of The ALS Association.

Why? - We want our Phi Delt chapters to build positive relationships with the local chapters of The ALS Association and assist them in their needs. We also want our chapters to be making an impact on the fight against ALS in their local communities.

Requirement #2 – Invite one of the following individuals to speak to the chapter and host this individual.

  • An individual with ALS
  • A family member or friend of an individual with ALS
  • A staff member or volunteer for an ALS-related organization
  • An ALS researcher

Why? - We want our members to connect with the cause. There is no better way to do this than to hear from somebody battling ALS, caring for somebody with ALS or working to eradicate ALS. We believe that an understanding and a connection to ALS will motivate our members to make a greater impact.

Requirement #3 – Collectively raise $40,000 through the Iron Phi program as a province. Raising $40,000 can be done through individual, chapter or province-wide Iron Phi events. On June 30 of each year, we will add up the total dollars raised by chapters through the Iron Phi website to determine if the requirement has been achieved. Both undergraduate and alumni participation is included. *Dollars raised through events that are not Iron Phi-related are not included in this requirement.

Why? - We want our chapters to collaborate with each other to achieve larger goals. We believe that a shared goal within the province will facilitate brotherhood, create accountability and bring synergies to the operations of all chapters. Along with moving the ALS cause forward on a local level, Iron Phi results allow our members to extend their reach by helping to fund ALS research and strengthening Phi Delta Theta.

Benefits:

While the benefits for becoming an Iron Phi Province will consist mostly of the internal satisfaction that participants receive from doing a good thing, we do have a few tangible benefits for the accomplishment:

  • All chapters in the province will receive a Lou Gehrig-related item to be displayed in their chapter house or on campus.
  • The Province President will receive an Iron Phi Province banner to proudly display.
  • Recognition within: The Scroll, the Iron Phi website, Phi Delta Theta’s social media platforms, and the Fraternity’s awards recognition banquets at the General Convention and Kleberg Emerging Leaders Institute.

For Canadian Brothers:

Phi Delta Theta also has a partnership with The ALS Society of Canada. For the purpose of this email, The ALS Society of Canada replaces The ALS Association in all areas above for brothers from Canadian chapters. Dollars raised by brothers from Canadian Chapters within the Iron Phi program are split equally between The ALS Society of Canada and the Canadian Phi Delta Theta Foundation.
