My Iron Phi Story
The Iron Phi Relay is Happening!
I completed my initial Iron Phi journey four years ago and became Iron Phi #469. I earned my Iron Phi after finishing my own version of a triathlon called a Phiathlon. I swam across Emerson Bay at Lake Okoboji for the second time, just a short 31 years after I did it the first time when I was 12 years old. The other two parts of the Phiathlon involved losing 20 pounds and completing the Iron Phi 5K at Phi Delta Theta's Kleberg Emerging Leaders Institute that summer.
I am at it again but this time I am participating in the Iron Phi Relay Race! Learn more about the Iron Phi Relay race here (http://support.ironphi.org/site/PageServer?pagename=IronHorseRelay&pw_id=1461) and join me in raising money to develop a cure for Lou Gehrig's disease.
For those of you not familiar with the term "Iron Phi", it is a distinction given to a small percentage of members within my Fraternity. The mission of Iron Phi is to support the LiveLikeLou Foundation and its mission to 'Leave ALS Better Than We Found It.' Specifically, Iron Phi dollars support ALS research conferences, summer camp experiences for children from ALS families, Iron Horse Scholarships for ALS dependents as they pursue their higher education dreams, and important ALS research.
According to The ALS Association's web site, approximately 5,600 people in the U.S. are diagnosed with ALS each year. It is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. Motor neurons reach from the brain to the spinal cord and from the spinal cord to the muscles throughout the body. The progressive degeneration of the motor neurons in ALS eventually leads to their death. I became an Iron Phi to raise awareness and to do something bold about Lou Gehrig's disease.
My Iowa State chapter brother Steve Good had a vision to make ALS the international philanthropy of our fraternity. He brought that vision to reality shortly after joining the Phi Delta Theta General Headquarters staff over 12 years ago. The Fraternity should be proud of Steve for all that he has done to make his vision a reality. Thank you brother!

How Does My Donation Make a Difference?
Your donation towards an Iron Phi athlete equally supports two very important things: Supporting ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease) through research and support of ALS families and leadership development for undergraduate members of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity.
At the end of each year calendar year, the LiveLikeLou Foundation grants dollars raised through Iron Phi to fund its initiatives that support ALS research, scholarships to support the higher education goals of ALS dependents, and summer camp experiences for children who have a parent or grandparent with ALS.
Dollars used for undergraduate leadership development have and continue to help Phi Delta Theta educate more of its undergraduate members as they work to “Become the Greatest Version of Themselves.”
