My Iron Phi Story
Welcome to Will Siegler's Super Spartan for 212
This year, I'll be attempting to become an Iron Phi - a distinction given to a small percentage of members within my Fraternity. The mission of Iron Phi is to strengthen the Phi Delta Theta International Fraternity and the impact it has on the fight against Lou Gehrig's disease through the fundraising and athletic efforts of its members. Lou Gehrig was a member of Phi Delta Theta, and our organization has taken an active role in finding a cure.
Last fall a family, myself, and my chapter lost a dear family member, friend, and Brother, Jeff Luong in a tragic plane accident. I plan on completing the Iron Phi Challenge in Jeff's memory and I would like to dedicate the net proceeds be donated in his honor. The net proceeds will support ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease) research, education, screening and treatment. It will also help strengthen an organization (Phi Delta Theta) that has had a lasting impact on Jeff's and my life. Jeff was the kind of person who would go out of his way to help anyone who needed a lending hand. Jeff had a huge impact on my life not only as a Brother of Phi Delta Theta but as a student at Embry-Riddle and very close friend.
I will be training this summer for the Virginia Super Spartan Race which is an 8 plus mile 25 obstacle race. Prior to the Super Spartan I will be racing in the Washington DC Spartan Sprint which is 3 plus miles and 15 obstacles.
According to The ALS Association's web site, approximately 5,600 people in the U.S. are diagnosed with ALS each year. It is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. Motor neurons reach from the brain to the spinal cord and from the spinal cord to the muscles throughout the body. The progressive degeneration of the motor neurons in ALS eventually leads to their death. That's why I'm becoming an Iron Phi. To do something bold about Lou Gehrig's disease.

Month 3 Training
I've just completed my 3rd month of training. I've run more miles and faster times this past month. I've switched into way is called "fire" stage of my training focusing on athleticism. My first race is just over two months away and am 70% of the way to my goal. I can't express the what it means to me to have the support of my friends, brothers, and family through my challenge!.

Month 2 Training
I've Just completed the 2nd Month of my training (well last week I did but didn't get a chance to post sooner) The training has becoming more intense and more challenging and yet exciting. I cannot wait to see what Month 3 brings. I've already come a long way and it is existing to think where my training will take me. Prior to starting this I could not do a dead hang (put towels on a pull up bar and just hang) for no more than 20 seconds at a time. Now my personal best is just over 1 minute and average over 45 secs when i do several reps!. Just want to say thank you again to everyone how has donated ...just over 40% of the way to my goal!

Month 1 Training
I've complete my first month of training and it has been fantastic. I've received several compliments and encouraging messages toward me reach my goal. The training will only get tougher from here on out.
Again I want to thank everyone who has had the chance to donate and support my cause.

How Does My Donation Make a Difference?
Your donation towards an Iron Phi athlete equally supports two very important things: Supporting ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease) through research and support of ALS families and leadership development for undergraduate members of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity.
At the end of each year calendar year, the LiveLikeLou Foundation grants dollars raised through Iron Phi to fund its initiatives that support ALS research, scholarships to support the higher education goals of ALS dependents, and summer camp experiences for children who have a parent or grandparent with ALS.
Dollars used for undergraduate leadership development have and continue to help Phi Delta Theta educate more of its undergraduate members as they work to “Become the Greatest Version of Themselves.”
