My Iron Phi Story
Welcome to My Personal Iron Phi Page
During the duration of this spring semester I will be actively pursuing the accolade of an Iron Phi, a title only given to a small percentage of members within my fraternity. The goal of an Iron Phi is to strengthen Phi Delta Theta International Fraternity, and our mission of supporting the fight against Lou Gherig’s disease through fundraising and our athletic efforts. Lou Gherig was a member of Phi Delta Theta and our organization has taken an active role in finding a cure.
The net proceeds from generous donations will be direclty given to support ALS (Lou Gherig’s Disease) research, screening, treatment, and education. It will also help in strengthening Phi Delta Theta as an organization who takes great pride in fundraising for this cause.
Roughly 20,000 people are diagnosed with ALS at any given time in the United States alone. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a disease affecting motor neurons of the spinal cord, which causes progressive weakness and atrophy of muscles. Simply put, ALS progressively deteriorates one’s ability to do everyday functions that most people take for granted, and is terminal for 80% of patients within 5 years.
After learning more in depth of what exactly ALS is and how it negatively affects so many people, I wanted to take action and lead an effort in fundraising for this cause. Seeing first hand the effects of ALS, it inspired me to take initiative and to do this in hopes that the money will help countless people through their journey.
The first step in my Iron Phi process is reaching a goal that I have set in raising $1,500 dollars for the research of Lou Gehrig’s Disease. Secondly, is an athletic event that challenges me to continue to live with the pursuit and longevity of serving others. The challenge that I have decided to take on is two parts. The first being the 1,000-pound challenge between squat, bench, and deadlift. The second part is to bench the bar 444 times in the least amount of time possible. The number is 444 because Lou Gehrig wore the number 4 throughout his baseball career.
I've set my personal goal at $1,500. That being said, I need your help to achieve that goal. How Does My Donation Make a Difference?
Your donation towards an Iron Phi athlete equally supports two very important things: Supporting ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease) through research and support of ALS families and leadership development for undergraduate members of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity.
At the end of each year calendar year, the LiveLikeLou Foundation grants dollars raised through Iron Phi to fund its initiatives that support ALS research, scholarships to support the higher education goals of ALS dependents, and summer camp experiences for children who have a parent or grandparent with ALS.
Dollars used for undergraduate leadership development have and continue to help Phi Delta Theta educate more of its undergraduate members as they work to “Become the Greatest Version of Themselves.”
