On July 18, 2010, I'll be attempting to become an Iron Phi - a distinction given to a small percentage of members within my Fraternity. The mission of Iron Phi is to strengthen the Phi Delta Theta International Fraternity and the impact it has on the fight against Lou Gehrig's disease through the fundraising and athletic efforts of its members. Lou Gehrig was a member of Phi Delta Theta, and our organization has taken an active role in finding a cure. Please consider sponsoring me in this endeavor.
The net proceeds will support ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease) research, education, screening and treatment. It will also help strengthen an organization (Phi Delta Theta) that has had a lasting impact on my life.
According to The ALS Association's web site, approximately 5,600 people in the U.S. are diagnosed with ALS each year. It is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. Motor neurons reach from the brain to the spinal cord and from the spinal cord to the muscles throughout the body. The progressive degeneration of the motor neurons in ALS eventually leads to their death.
On July 18th I will be attempting to complete my first Half Ironman by competing in the Vineman Ironman 70.3 Triathlon which consists of a 1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike, and 13.1 mile run. This event has become one of the most popular and highly competitive triathlons in the world, although my personal goal is to finish. The Vineman Ironman 70.3 Triathlon is held in Sonoma County, California. The course is a tour of Sonoma County's beautiful wine country, passing through four different grape growing regions: the Russian River Region, the Dry Creek Valley, the Alexander Valley, and Chalk Hill. I started a Blog in January to track my training in preparation for this challenging event. Feel free to check it out at http://keithaldrich.blogspot.com/
I've set my personal goal at $1,000, So I need your help. Would you please consider making a donation to help me achieve my goal. You can make a donation on this page by clicking on the "Make a Gift" link below the thermometer. You can also send a check to Iron Phi to me at 2250 E. Bidwell, Suite 100, Folsom, CA 95630, if you'd rather donate that way.
I hope that you'll share this incredible adventure with me - by supporting me in my fundraising efforts.
Thank you in advance for your generosity!
Sincerely,
Keith Aldrich

The Road to Ironman 70.3
For those that may be interested in how the typical middle aged guy who is overworked, underslept, overfed, and overweight gets off the couch one day and decides to do a Half Ironman, here is my chronicle of the journey since January. Each month I posted my progress.

TBF Olympic Distance Triathlon - 6/6/10
Tomorrow will be the first Triathlon of the 2010 season. Will be completing the TBF Olympic Distance Tri in the morning (.9 mi swim / 25 mi bike / 6.2 mi run). This will be my only event to work out the kinks in transition, fueling, hydration, etc. before the Ironman 70.3 in July. Will be trying out my new Xterra Wetsuit for the first time in an event.
Have pretty much taken the week off due to hip and lower back pain. Have only run 2 miles twice this week.
Hopefully tomorrow will be a good day. Either way, I will be out in the sun, moving, breathing, running, riding, swimming. I am just thankful that I can get out there and have a great time.
