My Iron Phi Story
Welcome to Gary Bredehoft's Iron Phi Page
In 2010 I bacame an IronPhi. The race I participated in is was the Pigman Half Ironman in Cedar Rapids Iowa on August 22, 2010, because of an injury I was unable to finish the run. I will rededicate myself in 2011 to reach the finishline in honor of my mother who lost her fight with ALS on January 4, 2011. Her strength and determination through this is an inspiration to me. Through the past 30 years she has always cared for my father who has MS. She is and always will be the person who influenced my life the most. She was my Rock! She always sacrificed her own needs for those of her family. Her strength and love will be sorely missed.
According to The ALS Association's web site, approximately 5,600 people in the U.S. are diagnosed with ALS each year. It is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. Motor neurons reach from the brain to the spinal cord and from the spinal cord to the muscles throughout the body. The progressive degeneration of the motor neurons in ALS eventually leads to their death. That's why I'm becoming an Iron Phi. To do something bold about Lou Gehrig's disease.

Training
Training is going well for the Half Ironman 2 months away. 3300 yd swim workout and 7 mile run today! My mom's battle with ALS is with me on all my training sessions.

Women's Triathlon
Started working with a women's only triathlon training class Saturday. It's so rewarding working with beginners in the sport and watching them improve and enjoy it!

Good 10 mile run on Saturday and 40 mile bike today. Weather is finally getting better!

Great Run
Had a great 6 mile run this morning. Weather is starting to get nice. Looking forward to a 35 mile bike tomorrow.

How Does My Donation Make a Difference?
Your donation towards an Iron Phi athlete equally supports two very important things: Supporting ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease) through research and support of ALS families and leadership development for undergraduate members of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity.
At the end of each year calendar year, the LiveLikeLou Foundation grants dollars raised through Iron Phi to fund its initiatives that support ALS research, scholarships to support the higher education goals of ALS dependents, and summer camp experiences for children who have a parent or grandparent with ALS.
Dollars used for undergraduate leadership development have and continue to help Phi Delta Theta educate more of its undergraduate members as they work to “Become the Greatest Version of Themselves.”
