My Iron Phi Story

Go Daddy GO!

Several years ago, I set out on a quest to become an "ironman" by completing an "Iron Distance" triathlon. What is that you ask? Just a little time in the water, on my bike and a bit of running. Well, to be a bit more specific, you can only earn the title by completing 140.6 miles, by:

Swimming 2.4 Miles

Biking 112 Miles AND

Running 26.2 Miles...

All in less than 17 hours!

That will be my objective on November 13, 2010 when I step to the starting line at 7am at Beach2Battleship in Wilmington, NC!

3 years ago while channel surfing (and I am sure snacking on something less than healthy...) I came across the story of an incredible athlete and person, Jon Blais, while watching the Ironman Hawaii. After watching 3 straight hours that included his 3 year journey, I knew what I wanted to do and I got up and started training.

I won't try and tell the story, Jon can do it far better than I can. I implore you to take 10 minutes and watch the following video. This is the story that inspired me to log over 13,000 miles cycling, 1,000 miles running and 50 miles swimming in training. I am absolutely positive this video will be worth your time and give you a greater appreciation for life and what you have.

Jon's story resonated with me personally, as Lou GehRig ("Mr. Iron Horse") and I belong to the same Phi Delta Theta fraternity and ALS has always been an important cause for me personally.

Approximately 5,600 people in the U.S. are diagnosed with ALS each year. It is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. Motor neurons reach from the brain to the spinal cord and from the spinal cord to the muscles throughout the body. The progressive degeneration of the motor neurons in ALS eventually leads to their death.

Hopefully you have found this motivating and informative. If so, I consider the awareness aspect of my endeavor complete and thank you!

If you are as inspired as I was and have the ability, I would like to ask for your help with supporting the final objective of my journey: raising money to support ALS research and fight this tragic disease.

No amount is too small! But in honor of the challenge I am embarking on, might I suggest a few "Iron Support" options! Perhaps:

$2.40 in support of my swim, just the same as a cup of coffee

$26.20 in support of my run, about the same as a dinner out, or maybe

$112.00 in support of my bike, about the same as attending your average pro sporting event

OR.....

$140.60 to become a full fledged "Iron Supporter!"

As I said, no amount is too small. The net proceeds will support ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease) research, education, screening and treatment.

How Does My Donation Make a Difference?

Your donation towards an Iron Phi athlete equally supports two very important things: Supporting ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease) through research and support of ALS families and leadership development for undergraduate members of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity.

At the end of each year calendar year, the LiveLikeLou Foundation grants dollars raised through Iron Phi to fund its initiatives that support ALS research, scholarships to support the higher education goals of ALS dependents, and summer camp experiences for children who have a parent or grandparent with ALS.

Dollars used for undergraduate leadership development have and continue to help Phi Delta Theta educate more of its undergraduate members as they work to “Become the Greatest Version of Themselves.”
