We Do It For Lou

My name is Adam Davis, and I am currently a sophomore at Butler University.  My first two years away at college have been full of amazing experiences and opportunities including a trip to the NCAA Final Four tournament in Houston, TX, joining a fraternity, becoming a Resident Assistant to a group of 28 freshman guys, and participating in several campus philanthropic events such as Relay for Life and Butler University Dance Marathon. 

Among all of these amazing experiences, however, none will ever be more meaningful to me than the Butler Catholic Community?s annual mission trip to Honduras that I participated in last May.  I joined a group of 10 students from Butler, IUPUI, and Ball State on a trip that forever changed my life.  While in Honduras, we worked with an organization called Sociedad Amigos de los Niños to care for the orphans, to help build the shelters and facilities necessary for the organization, and to share our faith with the inhabitants of Honduras.  We also held a school supplies drive in the months leading up to the trip and delivered a dozen luggage containers full of supplies to a very impoverished village in the mountains of Honduras.  The look of joy on the children?s faces when they received the modest notebooks and pencils will forever be burned in my memory.  I will never again take for granted just how much I am blessed with when a simple notebook brings so much joy to a child in need.

One of my favorite quotes from our host mother Mae Venezuela was ?When the Americans choose to come back to visit the children year after year, it gives the children the gift of hope.  It shows the children that there are people out there that truly care about them.?  This statement really resonates with me, and I hope to continue to travel to Honduras each summer.  This hope isn?t sustainable without the help and support of family and friends as well as the community.  I am very thankful for all of the funds and school supplies that St. Michael?s School, Plymouth High School, and Argos Jr./Sr. High School were able to provide to our trip last year. 

I am once again asking for the help and support of the community.  If you are able to help me with my trip either financially, with school supplies, or with prayers, it will be greatly appreciated.
