My Iron Phi Story
Help the fight against ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease)!
I am back at it again! Last year I was able to exceed my goal of raising $1,000 for ALS and I hope to do the same this year!!! My athletic event this year will be the Go St. Louis Half Marathon on April 7th 2013. While I am excited about the run I am also nervous?before starting my training the furthest I had ever run was the 5K last year. The Go STL race starts at 7:00AM and will take me through the streets of downtown St. Louis with us finishing by the Arch. For more information about the run you can go to http://www.gostlouis.org.
Like last year, I am entering this event to help raise money for the research, treatment and detection of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (I am also doing it to prove that despite my rapid hair loss there is still a little gas left in the tank). ALS is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. The motor neurons that reach from the brain to the spine to the muscles throughout the body deteriorate, causing paralysis and death. According to The ALS Association's web site, approximately 5,600 people in the U.S. are diagnosed with ALS each year. To-date there is no known cure.
I first became aware of ALS when I joined my college fraternity. In addition to being known as one of the greatest baseball player of his time, Lou is also known for the "Luckiest Man" farewell address he gave during his retirement from baseball on July 4th, 1939. Lou Gehrig was a member of Phi Delta Theta and consequently Phi Delta Theta has made finding a cure and supporting ALS one of its top fundraising priorities. To date through its Iron Phi program Phi Delta Theta has raised more than $400,000 for ALS treatment and research.

How Does My Donation Make a Difference?
Your donation towards an Iron Phi athlete equally supports two very important things: Supporting ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease) through research and support of ALS families and leadership development for undergraduate members of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity.
At the end of each year calendar year, the LiveLikeLou Foundation grants dollars raised through Iron Phi to fund its initiatives that support ALS research, scholarships to support the higher education goals of ALS dependents, and summer camp experiences for children who have a parent or grandparent with ALS.
Dollars used for undergraduate leadership development have and continue to help Phi Delta Theta educate more of its undergraduate members as they work to “Become the Greatest Version of Themselves.”
