We Do It For Lou

Hello and thanks for coming!

This year, I'll be  becoming an Iron Phi - a distinction given to a small percentage of members within my Fraternity. The mission of Iron Phi is to strengthen the Phi Delta Theta International Fraternity and the impact it has on the fight against Lou Gehrig's disease through the fundraising and athletic efforts of its members. Lou Gehrig was a member of Phi Delta Theta, and our organization has taken an active role in finding a cure.

The net proceeds will support ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease) research, education, screening and treatment. It will also help strengthen an organization (Phi Delta Theta) that has had a lasting impact on my life.

I have been fencing since the 7th of November 2011, and since that time I have gone on to become President of the Dalhousie/Kings Fencing Club, and compete in several tournaments in Nova Scotia.  Usually in late November, the Enguardians Fencing Club and The Fencing Association of Nova Scotia host an event known as the Trisword tournament.  For those unaware, Olympic fencing is performed in one of three disciplines corresponding to different weapons: foil, epee, and saber.  Each weapon is fought using different techniques and completely different strategy as the rules for what counts as a hit and what area of your opponent is target varies considerably.  At the Trisword tournament, fencers are encouraged to attempt to compete with each weapon, and a special prize is awarded to the person who achieved the highest overall ranking in foil, saber, and epee.  While I have fenced foil almost exclusively, this year I will be fencing all three.  I do not delude myself with thoughts of victory, but my goal is to come in the top 30% of foil and the top half of the Trisword ranking. 

According to The ALS Association's web site, approximately 5,600 people in the U.S. are diagnosed with ALS each year. It is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. Motor neurons reach from the brain to the spinal cord and from the spinal cord to the muscles throughout the body. The progressive degeneration of the motor neurons in ALS eventually leads to their death. That's why I'm becoming an Iron Phi. To do something bold about Lou Gehrig's disease.

In March of 2011 I ran a 36-hour Super Mariothon fundraiser for the Japan relief effort after the disastrous hurricane.  In memorium I'm going to be holding a 36-hour Zeldathon fundraiser to help drive funds for my Iron Phi status.  On April 25 at 12:00 until April 27 at 0:00 I'm going to be playing and streaming myself playing every Zelda game on my Twitch at twitch.tv/AstOnokGaming
