My Iron Phi Story
Pushing for most swimming miles at Lou's Olympics!
I became an Iron Phi at the Illinois Marathon on April 27th, 2019! I have been a comptetive swimmer for the past decade, so I thought I would do something very different as a challenge. I believe that if I push my body to its limits, it could have a lasting impact on the lives of people who can no longer do the same. I am also going to be training and running the race on a vegan diet because I want to go ahead and make myself the healthiest person that I can be. The world can be a cruel place sometimes, so I am trying my best to, in the words of phikeia oath, leave the world a little better than I found it.
The net proceeds will support ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease) research, education, screening and treatment. It will also help strengthen an organization (Phi Delta Theta) that has had a lasting impact on my life. The proceeds split 50/50 to help with the treatment of ALS and to leadership programs that will train future generations of Phis.
Approximately 5,600 people in the U.S. are diagnosed with ALS each year. It is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. Motor neurons reach from the brain to the spinal cord and from the spinal cord to the muscles throughout the body. The progressive degeneration of the motor neurons in ALS eventually leads to their death. That's why I'm becoming an Iron Phi. To do something bold about Lou Gehrig's disease.
I've now raised my personal goal from $1000 to $1506 in order to reflect the additional $444.44 that I am trying to raise from Feb. 4th to Apr. 30th, 2022, for Lou's Olympics. Over the course of this period, I am trying to log the most swimming miles of any Iron Phi or participants in the event. Currently, as of February 10th, I have swam a cumulative 16.87 miles.

How Does My Donation Make a Difference?
Your donation towards an Iron Phi athlete equally supports two very important things: Supporting ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease) through research and support of ALS families and leadership development for undergraduate members of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity.
At the end of each year calendar year, the LiveLikeLou Foundation grants dollars raised through Iron Phi to fund its initiatives that support ALS research, scholarships to support the higher education goals of ALS dependents, and summer camp experiences for children who have a parent or grandparent with ALS.
Dollars used for undergraduate leadership development have and continue to help Phi Delta Theta educate more of its undergraduate members as they work to “Become the Greatest Version of Themselves.”
