Nicholas Muller's Iron Phi Story
Dear Friends & Family,
Happy Passover & Easter Week to all!
For the second year in a row, I am helping to raise funds with my Phi Delta Theta fraternity brothers to support ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease). I am sure many of you know Lou Gehrig was a famous baseball player. But, Lou Gehrig was also a member of Phi Delta Theta, and our organization has taken an active role in raising awareness and funds to a supporting research, education, screening, treatment and hopefully one day a cure for ALS.
Lou Gehrig was nicknamed the “Iron Horse” for playing in 2,130 consecutive baseball games until ALS forced him to remove himself from the starting lineup and eventually causing his death at the young age of 37. This year, I'll be attempting to become an “Iron Phi” by raising $1,000 to help fight ALS. The mission of an Iron Phi is to strengthen the Phi Delta Theta International Fraternity and the impact it has on the fight against Lou Gehrig's disease through the fundraising and athletic efforts of its members.
Phi Delta Theta has had a lasting impact on my life. Its principle objectives are the cultivation of friendship among its members, the acquirement individually of a high degree of mental culture, and the attainment personally of a high standard of morality. The fraternity inspires all of our brothers to do good and my chapter of California Chi at the University of San Francisco is going to push as hard as we can to succeed the amount we raised last year. Last April the ‘Phine’ Gentlemen of California Chi raised over $9,000 in the month of April alone and $15,000 by the end of the ‘Iron Phi Challenge’. This year our aspirations are to surpass those amounts.

You can also send a check made out to Iron Phi and addressed to my name at Phi Delta Theta at 2345 Golden Gate Ave, San Francisco, CA 94118 if you'd rather donate that way. According to The ALS Association's website, approximately 5,600 people in the U.S. are diagnosed with ALS each year. It is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. Motor neurons reach from the brain to the spinal cord and from the spinal cord to the muscles throughout the body. The progressive degeneration of the motor neurons in ALS eventually leads to their death. That's why I'm becoming an Iron Phi.

The mission of Iron Phi is to strengthen the Phi Delta Theta International Fraternity and the impact it has on the fight against Lou Gehrig’s disease through the fundraising and athletic efforts of its members.Leading into ALS Awareness Month in May, the brothers of Phi Delta Theta will be raising awareness on ALS disease and raising funds for the ALS Association. During the month of April, the California Chi chapter will be defending its title for the nationwide Lou’s Challenge. Last year, we raised over $9,000 in the month of April alone, which was the most out of any other chapter in the nation.
Below, there is a list of brothers committed to becoming an Iron Phi. In order to become an Iron Phi, an individual must raise $1,000 and complete an athletic challenge. In order to become an Iron Phi Chapter, the whole chapter must raise $10,000 and collectively complete an athletic challenge. This year, the brothers from the California Chi chapter have set a fundraising goal of $15,000 and will be completing a Bridge-to-Bridge run from the Bay Bridge all the way to the other side of the Golden Gate Bridge. The task at hand won’t be an easy one, but we know that this will be a fulfilling experience that will last a lifetime.

How Does My Donation Make a Difference?
Your donation towards an Iron Phi athlete equally supports two very important things: Supporting ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease) through research and support of ALS families and leadership development for undergraduate members of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity.
At the end of each year calendar year, the LiveLikeLou Foundation grants dollars raised through Iron Phi to fund its initiatives that support ALS research, scholarships to support the higher education goals of ALS dependents, and summer camp experiences for children who have a parent or grandparent with ALS.
Dollars used for undergraduate leadership development have and continue to help Phi Delta Theta educate more of its undergraduate members as they work to “Become the Greatest Version of Themselves.”
