We Do It For Lou

Becoming an Iron Phi is an opportunity through Phi Delta Theta to raise funds and awareness for ALS research and family respite care. The net proceeds will support ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease) research, education, screening and treatment. 

I will participate in a March 5K honoring the memory of Max Gruver. I will also add 444 minutes of mindfulness to my challenge. I will also be honoring the memory of friends who have passed away from the complications of ALS - Sandy Hormel, a beloved teacher from our hometown who died in 2004 and Cheryl Todd Derickson, a beautiful and passionate cousin and former professional ballerina and dance instructore who died in 2021. I've recentyl added a high school classmate's name who is living with ALS to the list.

Approximately 5,600 people in the U.S. are diagnosed with ALS each year. It is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. Motor neurons reach from the brain to the spinal cord and from the spinal cord to the muscles throughout the body. The progressive degeneration of the motor neurons in ALS is terminal. That's why I'm becoming an Iron Phi. To be a part of the team fighting to eradicate the disease, support cutting edge research, and help families who care for their loved ones.
